Czigány, Dezső
1883 - 1938
After completing his studies at the Budapest School of Applied Arts, he became a guest student at the Pattern Drawing School, and a pupil of Simon Hollósy in Nagybánya from 1900. He also spent some time at the Munich Academy. He studied at the Julian Academy in Paris, and with J.P. Laurens in 1904, and became a pupil of Károly Ferenczy at the Pattern Drawing School in 1906. He participated in the exhibitions of MIÉNK (Circle of Hungarian Naturalists), and later became a member of the group called The Eight. Like his fellow artist Róbert Berény, he was very well acquainted with contemporary music, especially that of Leó Weiner and Béla Bartók, also playing their pieces. He had close ties with the poet Endre Ady, whose portrait he painted numerous times. In the beginning of the twenties he taught at independent schools and became a member of KUT in 1924. He painted in Paris and Southern France between 1925 and 1930. He committed suicide in 1938.
