A. Tóth, Sándor

Rimaszombat, 1904 - 1980, Pápa

Began studying at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts in 1922 and continued as a post-graduate student in 1926. A study trip to Vienna in 1924 was followed by one to London in 1928, meanwhile he made a living by drawing portraits. He lived in Paris until 1932, participating in the Salon d' Automne in 1929 and in the exhibition Art Hongrois Moderne in 1931, along with Tihanyi, Czóbel and Iván Farkas. He formed a friendship with Géza Blattner in Paris, working with puppets under his influence. He became a member of Blattner's popular avant-garde puppet company, the Arc-En-Ciel, and an official in the international organisation of puppeteers (UNIMA). On his return to Hungary in 1932, he began teaching at the *** Middle School to great effect, later opening an independent school. He resided in Pápa throughout, leaving only for a study trip to Erdély in 1932 and another to the United States of America in 1965. A permanent exhibition of his work was opened in Pápa in 1994.
